Ah, the pursuit of wine education. The one type of homework that we actually like to do! Although to many, deciphering the world of wine sometimes seems as daunting and confounding as a French Wine label, there is a solution. SPORTSMAN’S Fine Wines & Spirits is here to help. Our knowledgeable & helpful staff is on the ready to provide a friendly face and clear path through the seemingly contradictory and confusing world of wine. Here are a few tried & true ways that you can improve your wine knowledge:
1) Attend our complimentary drop-in tastings. Held every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm at each store, these informal wine tastings provide a great way to educate your palate about different varietals, regions & specific winery’s efforts. See our Monthly Calendar of Events for this month’s tastings.
2) Try one of our monthly In-Store Wine Tasting Events. Larger than our drop-in tastings, these monthly events usually feature 15-20 different wines from a specific region or winery. Held on the weekends for a nominal fee, these fun & informative events provide an unparalleled opportunity to enhance one’s knowledge and begin to build a “taste memory” for a number of different wines. 3) Attend one of our signature Winemaker Dinners. These classic events are held periodically throughout the year and feature unique, one-of-a-kind tasting formats. Typically structured in a formal wine tasting format, these tastings showcase the very finest efforts from the best in the business. Horizontal, vertical & comparative wine tasting perspectives are often afforded the lucky attendees of these classic events. Wine industry professionals host and contribute to these events, making them incredibly entertaining and informative evenings. Pricing & Format is determined on a per event basis. Check our Winemaker Dinners section for specifics about upcoming events.
4) Participate in one of our Sunday Roundtable Discussions. Every Sunday afternoon, at each SPORTSMAN’S location, one of our very own staff members will conduct an informal tasting and discussion based upon a varietal or region of their choosing. These casual tastings are a great way to learn the basics, as well as meet new friends who are interested in improving their wine knowledge. Link
5) Enroll in SPORTSMAN’S Wine 101. Every year, we offer this informative basic primer on the world of wine. Led by a knowledgeable industry professional, this multi-session course covers the basic components of wine - from winemaking techniques & enological science to varietal attributes and the geography of wine. Sign up for our E-Newsletter to receive timely information about our next session.
